86-car Pile-Up in Muskegon

On Sunday, February 12, a massive pile-up in Muskegon County, Michigan shut down a two-mile stretch of U.S. 31 for several hours. The pile-up happened just after 1 pm, between East Sherman Boulevard and East Laketon Avenue, when the highway was covered with black ice and conditions were white-out from lake effect snow. Cars in the front began slowing down, but drivers in back did not notice until it was too late, causing a chain reaction of crashes.

Several cars caught on fire, but thankfully, most were extinguished quickly. Twenty-five people were taken to the hospital, but only with minor injuries. Most were treated and released hours later. No tickets are expected to be issued, since everyone seemed to be driving as they should have under hazerdous conditions. (source)
