WTC Families Want Memorial Redesigned

It’s been just under 4 and 1/2 years since the Sept. 11 attacks. Since then, we’ve launched a war against the perpetrators, and we’ve cleaned up the debris at Ground Zero, and we’re moving foward, looking towards building a new structure and memorial on the site. Construction on the “Reflecting Absence” memorial is set to begin in March of this year. But that may hit a snag.

Some families of those who died in the September 11 attacks are now asking for officials to redesign the memorial, saying that by listing everyone’s names 70 feet below street level disrespects the victims. They also say that the underground design is dangerous, in case of a fire or terrorist attack. Police and fire union leaders have joined with some of these families to seek a new design.

The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation says that it would be safe in case of a fire or terrorist attack, saying that the memorial and museum would have fifteen exits, including emergancy stairwells. If the memorial plans change, TDI will let you know.
